Why Wear Retainers After Braces

Why Wear Retainers After Braces?
Posted on 04/20/2022

So, you’re finally done with braces? Congratulations! However, the end is not over. Now is the time to get retainers. But what are retainers? And why are they necessary? Learn the importance of retainers from Dr. Roy Gonzalez, Jr.! At our practice, we provide comprehensive orthodontic care from beginning to end, which means that we work with patients during the retention phase. If you’re almost done with your braces or Invisalign, here are 4 reasons why you should be wearing your retainers.

4 Reasons Why You Should Wear Your Retainer

  • Keep Teeth Straight- When your treatment ends, your teeth will want to move back to their original position. Unfortunately, braces don’t guarantee that the results will be permanent. When we place tension in and around the teeth using braces or Invisalign, new ligaments and bones are formed. Retainers are used to stabilize this new arrangement from the shift. They help keep the teeth aligned to ensure the results last.
  • Help Avoid Treatment Reversal- You’ve just worn braces or Invisalign for the past year or two (and just spent the money to do so). So why repeat it again? Retainers help avoid people having to go back to treatment. If you don’t wear your retainer, you’ll most likely have to wear another round of braces.
  • Maintain Space for Wisdom Teeth (especially if you are an adolescent or young adult)- For those who are teens and young adults, retainers can help make room for wisdom teeth to grow in. When you wear the retainer diligently, it can create the necessary space in the jaw to accommodate new teeth, such as wisdom teeth. Constant use of retainers ensures that the teeth don’t shift or crowd due to lack of space.
  • Promote Oral Hygiene- Misaligned teeth can contribute to poor dental hygiene, which can lead to periodontal disease. If you have crooked teeth, it makes it hard to clean certain spots while brushing/flossing. Remembering to put on your retainer every day is a great first step towards keeping good care of your mouth for the future.
