At the office of Dr. Roy Gonzalez, we've been providing orthodontic care to the community of San Antonio for two generations. We've seen a lot of trends come and go during our time in San Antonio, but now, there's a trend that really scares us: DIY braces. Some teens have been using at-home materials to try to move their teeth on their own, without the help of a trained orthodontist. While it may sound harmless or even cute, the truth behind DIY braces is that this is not the case.

A Trend That's Disaster for Teeth

DIY braces take many shapes and forms, but the overall idea is the same: people using materials they find lying around the house to try and influence the movement of their teeth. Different iterations of DIY braces have used rubber bands, elastic hair ties, and even simple cotton twine wrapped around teeth to try and move them, but the end result is always the same: potential for permanent damage to your teeth. Far from successfully moving the teeth, DIY braces can actually do irreparable harm to the teeth and the mouth. The problem is that orthodontics is a complex science using finely-calibrated technologies and treatments to apply specific, precise forces to the teeth. Only a trained orthodontist with years of schooling can safely use these techniques to move teeth.

DIY braces, on the other hand, cause serious problems with the health of teeth, gums, and even the bones of the face. By applying crude, blunt force to the teeth, they can cut off blood supply to the teeth and the gums, doing serious damage to the mouth. In many cases, teeth actually end up falling out due to damage from DIY braces – and that results in restorative dental treatments that can take months or years and cost thousands upon thousands of dollars. Far from being a "cheap way to straighten teeth," DIY braces are a great risk to your health. So, if you, your child, or anyone you know is thinking about DIY braces, tell them loud and clear that only a trained orthodontist can be trusted to safely move teeth.
