When undergoing braces treatment from your orthodontist, it’s important to practice proper braces care to receive the best possible treatment outcome. Besides attention to detail while brushing and flossing, it’s also very important to bypass certain foods with braces, in order to avoid potentially damaging your teeth or braces. Continue reading to learn about some foods to avoid and why.

Foods to Avoid

Orthodontic treatment is meant to help improve the overall health and appearance of your smile, so it’s crucial to observe good braces care in order to maximize your treatment benefits. This includes avoiding foods that are detrimental to your oral health, like sugary foods. Overindulging in sugary foods with braces leaves your teeth susceptible to plaque buildup around the brackets, which can lead to even bigger problems such as tooth decay.

Besides sugar, there are also other types of food that should be skipped while undergoing a braces treatment. Though relatively strong, there are many foods that the brackets and wires of braces may not be able to stand up to without the potential for damage occurring. This includes crunchy foods (like popcorn, pizza crust, pretzels, and ice), sticky foods (like gum, taffy, gummies, and caramels), and chewy foods (like bagels, rolls, and soft pretzels).

Though eating these foods doesn’t always spell out immediate trouble, it’s just not worth the risk of damaging a wire or bracket and derailing your braces treatment — or worse yet, developing tooth decay while trying to improve your smile! Avoiding these foods for the short duration of your treatment will be worth it when you can show off your confident new smile!
